Arenal Volcano above forest in Costa Rica

Costa Rica Itinerary 7 Days

Seven days on the drier Pacific side: La Fortuna, then Manuel Antonio. The Caribbean coast is the wetter choice in January.

La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio

About This Destination

Costa Rica in January is a where-to-go question, not a whole-country loop. The Pacific side and the Arenal area are in the dry season. The Caribbean coast, including Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero, is often wetter. This Costa Rica itinerary 7 days stays in two places: La Fortuna, then Manuel Antonio.

Daylight is about 11.5 hours, with sunrise near 06:00 and sunset near 17:30. Afternoons can still bring a short shower. Reserve the La Fortuna hotel, a Manuel Antonio hotel, the shared shuttle or rental car between them, and Manuel Antonio National Park entry before you travel. January is busy. This page only plans the days. It does not book rooms, cars, or park tickets.

La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio is about 4.5 to 5.5 hours by car or shared shuttle, not a quick hop. Monteverde is left out so the week is not three long transfer days.

Day-by-day itinerary outline

  1. Day 1

    San José to La Fortuna

Land at SJO and go to La Fortuna. The drive is about 3 hours. Be at the hotel by late afternoon and keep the evening to a hot-spring soak.

  2. Day 2

    Arenal trails and hanging bridges

Morning at Arenal 1968 or Mistico Hanging Bridges. Back in town by mid-afternoon. The volcano is often in cloud even in the dry season.

  3. Day 3

Río Celeste, then a quiet afternoon

Río Celeste is a long morning from La Fortuna. Leave by 07:00. The blue pool is the sight. Be back before dark.

  4. Day 4

    La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio

The long transfer day. Leave by 08:00. About 4.5 to 5.5 hours to Manuel Antonio. No park visit today.

  5. Day 5

    Manuel Antonio National Park

Be at the park gate at opening with an entry you already hold. The main trail, the beach, and out before the afternoon crush.

  6. Day 6

    A slower Pacific day

No second national park. Morning at a beach or the Nauyaca waterfall if you want one more outing. Nauyaca is a drive, not a walk from the hotel.

  7. Day 7

    Manuel Antonio to San José

About 3 to 3.5 hours to SJO. Leave on the clock your flight needs. No new stop.

Costa Rica Itinerary 7 Days planning questions

Where should I go in Costa Rica in January?

The Pacific side and La Fortuna. This week uses La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio because they are in the dry season. The Caribbean coast is the region more likely to be wet in January.

Is seven days enough?

Yes for two bases. It is not enough to add Monteverde and a Caribbean stop without spending most of the week in a shuttle.

How do I get from La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio?

A shared shuttle or a rental car, about 4.5 to 5.5 hours. There is no direct public bus that makes this an easy morning hop. Reserve the shuttle or the car before January.

What should I reserve ahead?

Hotels in both towns, the transfer, and Manuel Antonio National Park entry. The park limits daily visitors. Hot-spring entries around Arenal also cap numbers. Paradise Pilot does not book any of these.
