Gullfoss waterfall in Iceland
Iceland Itinerary 7 Days
Seven January days based on Reykjavik and Vík. Daylight is about five hours. Northern lights need a clear, dark sky and are not guaranteed.
About This Destination
Iceland in January is a northern-lights trip only if you treat the lights as weather. In Reykjavik around mid-January the sun is up for about five hours, roughly 11:00 to 16:00. Early January is shorter. Lights need darkness and a break in the cloud, away from the city. Many nights are cloudy. This Iceland itinerary 7 days does not promise an aurora.
The driving is the Golden Circle and the south coast as far as Vík, in daylight, on a car with winter tires. Storms close roads. Check the road report each morning. Reserve the car, the Reykjavik nights, and the Vík night before you go. A lights seat on a minibus is optional and still cannot promise the sky. Paradise Pilot does not book the car, the rooms, or the tour.

Day-by-day itinerary outline
- Day 1
Keflavík to Reykjavik
The airport transfer is about 45 minutes. Arrive, eat, and only go looking for lights if the sky is actually clear.
- Day 2
Golden Circle in the daylight
Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss, in that order, starting as soon as it is light. Back in Reykjavik before you are driving a mountain road in the dark.
- Day 3
South coast to Vík
Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, then Vík. Leave Reykjavik at first light. The waterfalls are on the Ring Road.
- Day 4
Reynisfjara, then no further east
Reynisfjara in the late morning light. The sneaker waves are the hazard. Do not continue to the glacier lagoon.
- Day 5
Vík back toward Reykjavik
Drive west in daylight. One stop you liked on the way east, then a night in Reykjavik or in a countryside hotel if you want darker sky.
- Day 6
Reykjavik in the few daylight hours
Hallgrímskirkja, the harbor, and Harpa. That is a January city day. A lagoon only if you already have a timed entry.
- Day 7
Keflavík
About 45 minutes to the airport. Leave the buffer the airline asks for. Weather delays are normal in January.
Iceland Itinerary 7 Days planning questions
Will I see the northern lights in January?
Maybe. January is dark enough, which is the point. You also need clear sky and you need to be away from Reykjavik’s lights. Clouds cancel more nights than the solar forecast does. A tour helps with the driving. It does not control the sky.
How much daylight is there?
About five hours in Reykjavik in the middle of January, less in the first week and a bit more at the end of the month. Plan waterfalls and the Golden Circle inside that window. Do not drive the south coast after sunset if the forecast is poor.
Can I add Jökulsárlón to these seven days?
Not safely in January. The glacier lagoon is about three hours beyond Vík each way. That is a summer day, or a separate night further east. This week stops at Vík.
What should I reserve ahead?
The car with winter tires, hotels in Reykjavik and Vík, and a northern-lights minibus if you want a guide instead of driving at night. Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon only if you already hold a time. This site does not book them.
